Dieting, essentially, refers to the practice of food intake in limited amount to reach a preferred weight. People usually associate dieting with weight loss with good reason. For those who are regarded as obese or overweight, they have their eyes fixed on losing pounds. Meanwhile, athletes and alarmingly thin people focus on gaining weight.

Types of Dieting

To make things clearer, it is best if we classify dieting into weight-loss diets and weight-gain diets.

1. Weight-loss Diets

As the name suggests, the diets which fall under this type are aimed to help an individual lose weight. Most weight-loss diets limits dieters to eat certain foods to get rid of the unwanted weight. Take the famous Atkins diet as an example. As you are aware of, Atkins diet restrict the intake of carbohydrates. Some weight-loss diets focus on what kind of food has to be eaten instead of what to avoid. A case in point is the Bread for Life diet. Obviously, it advocates the intake of bread, not necessarily for life, but in large amounts though.

If you think that any weight-loss diet can help you shed off twenty pounds, think again. “One size fits all” is good for clothes but it is not when we are talking about dieting. Your body type is different from your friends or colleagues. It is best if you consult a dietician so that you will be sure what diet is more appropriate to your goal or body type.

2. Weight-gain Diets

Compared to the number of people wanting to lose weight, there are only few individuals who like to have extra pounds. Gaining weight is not as simple as eating to your heart’s desire.

In fact, it calls for the same effort needed to lose weight. Weight-gain diets, specifically the ones for athletes, are designed to put on weight in the form of muscle. Have you noticed how American football players have, more or less, identical form? Besides NFL players, athletes engaged in more physical activities like boxing are required to maintain a particular body mass. In other words, they need to bulk up.

There are also weight-gain diets designed for people who are underweight. These weight-gain diets are not for building muscles. Rather, they are for gaining lost body fat and other important nutrients. Simply put, these weight-gain diets are created so that underweight individuals can achieve their normal body weights.
